How to Optimize Images for SEO

Images are often the biggest cause of slow page loads. Proper image optimization improves both speed and search visibility.

File format

Use WebP for most images (smaller files, good quality). Use JPEG for photographs when WebP isn't available. Use SVG for logos and icons. Avoid PNG for photographs (files are too large).

Sizing

Serve images at the size they'll be displayed. A 4000px wide image displayed at 400px wastes bandwidth. Use responsive images with srcset to serve different sizes to different devices.

Compression

Compress images before uploading. Tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh can reduce file sizes by 50-80% with minimal quality loss.

Alt text

Every meaningful image needs descriptive alt text. This helps screen readers, helps Google understand the image, and can drive traffic from Google Images.
